Day 55: Footings!

Day 55: Footings!

After the holiday weekend, the footings were chalked out today. For anyone that is wondering, the footings are large slabs of concrete that sit at the bottom of the basement walls to prevent the walls from shifting in the dirt by distributing the load of the house over a larger area of earth. Our footings...
Day 54

Day 54

The rest of the dirt from the theater, driveway, and basement grade was moved to the back yard – so it can be used as back-fill dirt when the basement walls are done – but, two additional truckloads needed to be taken away. At this point, the basement grade is level, the theater cuts are...
Day 53

Day 53

The initial driveway slope was created, mostly to allow the mini-excavator and bobcat to go up it, the steps in the theater were completed, the shoring between the basement and driveway was back-filled, and the excavated grade was leveled. Most of the excess dirt was moved to the backyard area (bottom right of the video)...
Day 52

Day 52

The crew spent most of the day wrapping up the shoring between the driveway and the theater (top left of video), although they also managed to do a bit more leveling of the basement sub-floor.
Day 51: Foundation Prep

Day 51: Foundation Prep

The shoring/excavation/concrete contractor switched crews today from the excavation guys to the concrete guys! This means that we have officially started work on the foundation. The new crew spent about half the day getting their bearings, pulling strings, taking elevations, etc. The second half of the day was spent excavating the steps in the theater...
Day 50

Day 50

Back to the skeleton crew again. Today’s task was to remove the last four truckloads of dirt… and now we are done with excavation! Dirt export truck-load total: 240 loads.
Day 49

Day 49

When the crew made the first pass at leveling the bottom of the excavation yesterday, it was obvious that a few more inches needed to go. A few inches over this large of an area turns out to be a lot of dirt. Another 18 truckloads were exported today, although that also includes cutting the...
Day 48

Day 48

We had a minimal crew today, who made a first pass at trying to level out the bottom of the excavated hole. In the process, 6 loads of dirt were exported. Dirt export truck-load total: 218 loads.
Day 47

Day 47

Another day of exporting dirt… 10 truckloads were exported today. The crew also did a little bit of work on the lagging along the east wall (right side of the camera). Dirt export truck-load total: 212 loads.
Day 46

Day 46

The phone and cable companies showed up today, as promised, to complete the relocation of phone and cable service, for the two neighbors to the west, to the new underground conduits. It is really nice to see only electric power lines remaining on that pole… which are still scheduled to be relocated any day now!...
Day 45

Day 45

Another day of installing lagging. Today the crew focused on the northwest corner of the lot, which is where the driveway will slope down. No dirt was exported today. The phone and cable companies came out today to start moving their lines off the utility pole to the new underground conduits. They will be back...
Day 44

Day 44

The shoring guys were here again on a Saturday. The east wall is to within a few inches of the final excavation depth, which is great news. On the down side, no word from the electric company yet about timing for the pole removal… All fees have been paid, documents have been signed, and various...
